    As any consumer, food is necessary for survival and the Spotted Owl has a variety of food.
    The Great Horned
    Owl is a predator for
    the spotted owl.
    • The owl would be a secondary consumer in a food web as Barred Owls and Great Horned Owls are predators.
    • Spotted Owl is a predator, meaning it hunts for it's own food.
    • Consumes small mammals such as rats, mice, voles, rabbits and bats.
    • Main prey are flying squirrels but they will also consume birds, to an extent.
    • Since it consumes small mammals, this owl is a carnivore, meaning it only consumes meat.
    Thus, this bird has a variety of food which help them survive.

    To be able to consume its prey, the Spotted Owl must catch it first, and they have their own way to catch food.
    • The Spotted Owl sits and waits for an animal to come along; perching on tree branches.
    • Glide down to catch, but they can also catch prey mid air.
    • Their hooked bill and sharply curved talons help tear apart prey, making it able to eat.
